Vang Vieng, Laos – A Place That Stays With You

About Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng (Lao: ວັງວຽງ) is a small town located in central Laos, in Vientiane Province, beautifully nestled along the Nam Song River. Surrounded by dramatic limestone karsts, lush greenery, and rice fields, it has attracted travelers from all over the world for years, becoming one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. It’s a place where nature takes center stage, and the scenery has a way of making you stop and simply admire it.

We arrived in Vang Vieng by bus directly from Vientiane, which turned out to be a comfortable and relatively quick journey. The drive itself was a preview of what awaited us—leaving the capital behind, the landscape gradually transformed into mountains, greenery, and peaceful countryside. As soon as we arrived, the town’s atmosphere was immediately noticeable: laid-back, backpacker-friendly, and completely surrounded by nature.

To kick off our adventure in Laos, I prepared a short drone video and a photo gallery from Vang Vieng. I hope they capture at least a fraction of the town’s incredible beauty. After all… sometimes there’s no need to write too much when you can simply show it. The aerial views explain better than words why this place leaves such a lasting impression.

Vang Vieng from Above

I filmed these drone shots spontaneously in various places I managed to reach using a DJI NEO 2 drone. Some of the footage was recorded directly in town, while other clips were captured along the route to Blue Lagoon 3. The route is approximately 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles) long, and there are plenty of fascinating places to discover along the way. 🙂

I explored this route mainly on a rented scooter (around 25 PLN per day), and for one day I rented an ATV (quad bike) for 1 million Lao kip (LAK), which was roughly 180 PLN. Exploring the small villages hidden among the mountains turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip.

In my opinion, the best way to experience Vang Vieng is to explore it on your own, whether by scooter or ATV, rather than limiting yourself to the well-known tourist attractions marked on the map. Along the way you’ll discover unexpected places—a castle under construction, tiny huts standing beside rice fields where buffaloes casually wander past, or a restaurant overlooking an endless sea of vibrant green rice paddies.

Another thing worth mentioning is that every morning and evening, both tourists and locals take to the skies in hot air balloons or paragliders to admire the spectacular landscape from above. Although the scenery is already stunning from the ground, it becomes even more impressive when viewed from the air.

In the end, you’ll find countless unique places and views in Vang Vieng—things that are almost impossible to come across in Europe. A quirky bar filled with motorcycles, tools, and all sorts of unusual equipment, run by a very friendly Norwegian? Cows, bulls, or birds casually blocking the road while you’re riding your scooter? You’ll find all of that here—and much more. During one of my rides, I encountered a group of enormous water buffaloes standing on a narrow country road. I have to admit… I decided it was wiser to turn around than continue.

Personally, I was absolutely amazed by this place. Saying goodbye wasn’t easy, and the five nights we spent there passed far more quickly than I had expected.

Recommended Accommodation in Vang Vieng

Ban Lao Guesthouse

During my stay in Vang Vieng, I stayed at Ban Lao Guesthouse.

The accommodation has mixed reviews, and I generally understand why. The rooms are located above a restaurant, room quality varies considerably, and the listing can be misleading because it mentions bungalows even though there aren’t any.

That said, the person managing the guesthouse was incredibly kind, understanding, and helpful throughout our stay. On top of that, the views from the terrace were absolutely fantastic and made the experience well worth it.
